Our focus is to bring the joy, energy, and positive message at the heart of James Brown-inspired funk to a new generation.
James Brown formed his legendary backup band, The J.B.’s (the James Brown Band), in 1970. In the early 1980s, Mr. Brown evolved the band into The Soul Generals, a name that remained associated with his band through the decades until his passing in 2006.
We take the name The General Souls as both an homage to that legacy and a declaration that, to the best of our ability, we want to carry this music forward—and show that the music of James Brown is for everyone. Its rhythms and spirit are woven into the fabric of popular music, and we believe this music can be a powerful way to connect people and bring us together.
The General Souls believe music can do more than make you move. It can encourage you to keep going, lift someone else up, and bring people together.

Our debut album, Rise When Fallen Down, channels the energy, rhythm, and positive spirit of classic funk and invites kids and families to listen, dance, move, and connect.
The album features five original tracks by The General Souls, along with two tracks from the JB JAMP BAND, all carrying uplifting messages about joy, perseverance, friendship, and doing better and better.
The music is designed to be fun for children while giving parents something they can enjoy right alongside them.
